NASDPTS Members,

Many of you are probably well versed on the new FCC narrowbanding requirements, but here is some additional information for any who may not be adequately informed and for distribution to your school districts. Local and state enforcement offices and public safety agencies should be well informed on this topic, so you and the local school districts may want to consult with those agencies if questions exist regarding school district two-way radio systems.

From the U.S. Department of Justice article below, here are some of the key points:

•    Most current public safety radio systems use 25 kHz-wide channels.  
•    The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated that all non-Federal public safety licensees using 25 kHz radio systems migrate to narrowband 12.5 kHz channels by January 1, 2013.  
•    Agencies that do not meet the deadline face the loss of communication capabilities.  
•    Agencies need to start planning now to migrate to narrowband systems by assessing their current radio equipment and applying for new or modified licenses.
